Mini Splits: One Solution for Year-Round Comfort
October 24, 2018
As fall temperatures finally arrive here in Virginia and we prepare for winter, you’re probably straddling between both of your home comfort systems — the air conditioning system one day and the heating system the next. Well, what if we told you that you didn’t necessarily have to rely on two different systems to stay comfortable throughout the year?
With a ductless mini split system, you can use one system to both air condition and heat your home.
What Is a Mini Split System?
You may be familiar with the term “mini split AC” or “split air conditioner.” While these terms do accurately describe what mini splits do, they only tell half of the story.
Mini splits, also known as mini split heat pumps, are dual purpose home comfort systems which provide both cooling and heating. Rather than connecting to ductwork to distribute cool and warm air through a home, they are installed directly in the rooms or areas they condition.
A mini split actually consists of two parts: an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air handling unit. These two parts are connected via refrigerant lines. In the winter, the outdoor unit absorbs ambient heat in the air, compresses it, and sends it to the indoor unit via the refrigerant lines. In the summer, the process reverses and the indoor unit sends unwanted heat outdoors.
The Benefits of Installing Mini Splits
Mini splits offer a number of benefits over traditional HVAC systems. They are extremely versatile because they can be installed virtually anywhere and make very little noise when they operate. They are also energy efficient and easy to install.
Mini splits use a small amount of electricity to cool and heat. Plus, they eliminate the need for potentially leaky ductwork. This makes them especially energy efficient and could potentially help you lower those monthly utility bills.
Customized & Targeted Comfort
Because mini splits are installed directly in the areas they condition, you gain greater control over your indoor comfort. You might choose to install one mini split in your home as a supplement to your existing HVAC system (great for room additions); or you might install multiple mini splits as a comprehensive home comfort solution.
Easy to Install
Because mini splits can be installed virtually anywhere and no ductwork is involved, mini splits are easy to install (though installation should be left to a professional). This makes mini split installation a simple way to enhance indoor comfort, save energy, and even lower your utility bills.
