Heating and cooling accounts for nearly half of the average home utility bill. For a heating and cooling system to properly function, it must be sized properly. This involves determining the heating and cooling load of a house or how much heating and cooling a home actually needs.

Oversized air conditioning systems may not extract enough humidity from the air, making the home uncomfortably humid. Oversized systems turns on and off more often, which causes wear and tear and shortens the equipment life. This cycling increases energy use, driving up utility bills and degrading comfort with temperature swings. Larger HVAC systems also cost more but don't provide an additional benefit.
